Operation Christmas Child meeting set for Oct. 2

Local News

An organizational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Somerset’s First Baptist Church for individuals interested in becoming involved with this year’s Operation Christmas Child project.

Operation Christmas Child, started in 1993, sends toy-filled shoeboxes to children in poverty-stricken countries across the world.

American citizens fill the boxes with small, non-perishable items and then take them to collection points to be sent overseas.

Last year, nearly 12,000 shoeboxes were collected from the Lake Cumberland area.

The Operation Christmas Child Area Team for Lake Cumberland, which includes Laurel, Clay, Whitley, Knox, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne counties, will meet Oct. 2 to help individuals learn how to get their church or organization involved in the project.

Special guest speaker will be Olivia Smith of Louisville, Ky., a 14-year-old who has a unique story about how she became involved with Operation Christmas Child.

Contact Sheri Yonts at (606) 679-8257 or Debbie McCloud at (606) 677-1547 for more information about the meeting.
