Toys for Tots signups get underway today

Today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. people can get on the list to receive items from Toys to Tots.

Debbie Hines, scout leader of Boy Scout Troop 79, said this year the organization is trying to make sure those who receive items from their organization aren’t receiving items from other organizations. She explained that is why they are asking all those who wish to get toys for their children to come to the signup day.

Parents or guardians of children (newborn to 12 years of age) can sign up at the Scout Room behind First Christian Church on Ky. 39. As well as today, there will also be a sign up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 22. People must have identification with them and then they will be given a pick-up ticket.

Hines said this year everyone must come to one of the sign-ups and they will not be able to take phone calls.

To help with the project, the troop is also accepting new and gently used toys to hand out to local needy children at Christmas beginning Nov. 3 through Dec. 17. Trailers will be at Ashley Furniture on Ky. 39 and at Ashley Furniture on U.S. 27 (light 8).

Hines said over 500 children were given toys last year through the project, which the troop has participated in since 1924.

This year the toys will be given out on Dec. 22.
