A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On

Somerset — Foundation work has begun in earnest on the new Steak ’n Shake now under construction at Stonebrook Center on South U.S. 27 in Somerset. “We’re planning to open by mid- to late-February 2014,” said Kevin Cordell, a spokesman for the restaurant. Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934, in Normal, Illinois, by Gus Belt, For over 79 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for "steakburger." The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped "milk shakes." To prove his burgers were exceptionally prime, Belt would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Steak ’n Shake joins Texas Roadhouse—expected to open in early December—as the second restaurant at Stonebrook. Stonebrook developer Brook Ping said he is working with other business which have expressed interested in locating at Stonebrook.
