Indoor pot grow discovered during weekend house fire

Somerset — Local fire officials stayed busy this weekend, responding to a number of blazes at area homes — including one in which an alleged indoor marijuana growing operation was discovered.

Firefighters with the Parkers Mill Volunteer Fire Department and the Somerset Fire Department (both agencies are paged automatically) were called to a home at 1013 Winding Ridge Drive on Sunday after a fire was reported at the residence.

According to Lt. Nick Cantrell, with the Somerset Fire Department, which was the assisting department, the fire started in the attic of the home.

But it was after the fire was mostly contained and firefighters were looking for hot spots in the home’s basement when they allegedly came across an indoor marijuana growing operation.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, deputies Bryan Shepard, Todd Wilson and Jason Lay found eight marijuana plants and grow lights in the basement of the home. The plants and lights were confiscated.

The home’s resident, Roy R. Woodward, 62, was cited to Pulaski District Court on the charge of cultivating marijuana more than five plants.

The investigation is continuing.

Fire officials remained on the scene of that blaze for around two hours, and the home suffered smoke and water damage.

Cantrell said the Somerset Fire Department, with assistance from Parkers Mill, responded to another fire Monday at around 1:30 a.m. at a home located around two miles north of Somerset on Ky. 39.

Cantrell said the fire appeared to begin in the rear bedroom of the residence, which is a mobile home. Luckily, no one was home when the fire started.

Cantrell said the fire was contained to the back bedroom, but the home did sustain smoke and water damage.

The causes of both fires are still unknown.
