Parade will kick off yuletide season

56 units registered for downtown event at 5 p.m. Saturday

Somerset — The 2011 Christmas shopping season officially kicks off Saturday when a 56-unit parade, sponsored by Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, moves along a mile-and-a-quarter route to the community’s official tree-lighting ceremony at Judicial Center Plaza.

The parade forms at Meece Middle School and at 5 p.m. travels west along East Mt. Vernon Street; turns north on College Street and goes past Somerset High School; then west on Oak Street; then south on Main Street past Fountain Square; then east on Spring Street to a parking area at Pulaski Court of Justice.

The tree-lighting ceremony on Judicial Center Plaza begins at 7 p.m. followed by an open-air showing of the Christmas film classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The parade units (not in parade order) are:

West Somerset Baptist Church, 20-foot trailer; Blackboard Student Services, hay wagon; Somerset 106/WTLO Radio Station (Forcht Broadcasting), mobile unit; Cumberland Security Bank, Commonwealth Journal, Lindsey Wilson College Somerset Campus, rollback truck; independent Corvette owners, and Pulaski County High School JROTC.

Also, American Legion Post 38/Southwestern High School JROTC, 20 foot-trailer, car, marchers; Clear Channel Radio Lake Cumberland mobile unit; Elvis York Construction, tractor and wagon; Forcht Bank, semi-trailer; Good Rapport Tutoring, 12-foot trailer and three clowns; Lake Cumberland Mini Monsters, mini trucks; Somerset Police Department, two motorcycles; and Aire Serv Heating/Air Conditioning, car.

Also, Beech Grove Methodist Church, truck pulling trailer; Southside Church of God of Prophecy, truck with trailer; Somerset Fire Department, truck, float, character; Pulaski County Fire Department, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, Pulaski County EMS, Pulaski County Little Miss & Mr., Pulaski County Judge-executive Barty Bullock and Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler.

Also, Burnside Mayor Ron Jones,  Pulaski County High School Marching Band, Justin Warren, horse; Candido’s Towing, four trucks; Sardis Chapel UMC, float; Somernites Cruise, 8-10 classic cars; Active Day, pickup; Eubank football/ cheerleaders, truck pulling wagon; and Blue Ribbon Riders 4-H Horse Club, truck, cart, walkers.

Also, PCHS Dance Team, truck with gooseneck trailer; Pitman Creek Baptist Church, pickup & trailer; Southwestern High School Band, Missy’s Gymnastics/NMS dance team, Liberty Baptist Church youth group, truck with trailer pulling kids; Liberty Baptist Church youth group, truck with trailer pulling float, golf cart; B.R. Callahan, classic car; and Shopville Stab Fire Dept./Girl Scouts, fire trucks.

Also, Cub Scouts of America Pack 134, Pulaski Mustangs, truck with trailer; Denham Street Baptist Church, truck with trailer; American Cancer Society, pickup and walkers; Girl Scouts, Farmer’s Supply, big blue Ford tractor; Miss Bowling Green Outstanding Teen/Laura Hancock, car; and King Pharmacy, pickup pulling trailer.
