Search is on for driver who struck elderly man

Somerset —

Police are looking for a driver who fled the scene Monday after he allegedly hit a pedestrian in downtown Somerset.
Emergency workers received a call about a pedestrian accident at St. Mildred Church, located at 203 S. Central Avenue in downtown Somerset, at around 1 p.m. Monday.
According to the accident report filed by the Somerset Police Department, which responded to the incident, Orval Stein, 84, of Somerset, was struck by a vehicle in the church parking lot while attempting to keep the driver of the car from leaving. Stein and several others tried to check on the driver of the vehicle, described as a silver two-door Hyundai, when the accident happened.
“ ... Stein approached the vehicle along with other individuals to check on the driver’s status of (the Hyundai),” stated the police report, filed by SPD Officer Matthew Gates. “(Stein) and witnesses stated that the driver had been in he parking lot for some time and was huffing some type of inhalant.”
The driver of the Hyundai, who had not been identified as of press time Monday, tried to leave and Stein “ ... tried to stop him from leaving due to (the driver) being under the influence,” stated the report.
The driver reportedly threw the car in reverse, with Stein standing in the open door of the Hyundai.
According to Stein and witnesses at the scene, the driver backed the Hyundai up, “knocking (Stein) down, dragging him under the open door in a north direction.”
After Stein was freed, the Hyundai struck another vehicle before the driver fled the scene.
Stein was treated at the scene “for injuries to his head,” but declined transport by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, according to the report.
The driver of the Hyundai was described as a white male with dark curly hair.
Anyone with information on the driver is asked to call the SPD anonymous tip line at 676-TIPS.
