Salyers, Fowler reach milestones in team’s win

By STEVE CORNELIUS, CJ Sports Editor

Somerset Prior to Friday night’s Southwestern and McCreary Central girls district match-up, senior post player Stephanie Salyers was presented her 1,000-point ball after she hit the prestigious milestone on Tuesday night against Monticello.

Ninety minutes later, teammate Ashley Fowler achieved the same feat as she scored a game-high 30 points in the game to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the Lady Warriors to an easy 79-42 win over McCreary Central.

“Stephanie (Salyers) 1,000 point ball presentation was planned, Ashley Fowler’s was not,” Southwestern coach Tim Rice joked.

Fowler nailed six treys on the night with three of them coming in the opening quarter. By halftime Fowler had already accumulated 16 points and needed only 13 more to join the elite scoring club.

“We knew Ashley needed 29 points to have 1,000 points for her career and we knew it was inevitable that she would reach the mark soon,” Rice explained. “I was aware she was within six points late in the game and I knew it meant a lot to her to get it at home. So, we gave her three more opportunities before we took her out and she hit on all three tries.”

“I am real proud of both Stephanie and Ashley because they have worked hard for me over the last five years,” Rice added.

Fowler now has 1,001 points, Salyers has 1,029, Devin Fothergill is the all-time leading Lady Warrior scorer with 1,361 and Danay Fothergill is within reach of 1,000 points this season with 772 points. The aforementioned girls led the Lady Warriors in scoring last night with Fowler scoring 30, Salyers with 22, Danay Fothergill with 11 and Devin Fothergill with 6.

Southwestern pounded away in the paint early with inside scores by Devin Fothergill, Fowler and Salyers to open up a 9-2 lead.

“I thought we had an advantage, especially inside,” Rice said. “McCreary didn’t have a lot of size in there and I knew our big girls could really do some work.”

“If we get our outside-inside game going and our opponents have to come out and guard us, we are going to be pretty tough,” Rice said. “We have been shooting the ball well from the perimeter for the last three or four games.”

Then, when the Lady Raider defense sagged inside, Fowler nailed three long range bombs within a two-minute stretch to open the Lady Warrior lead to 18-8.

Southwestern was up 44-17 by halftime and 66-26 by the end of the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter Fowler caught fire again with back-to-back treys, a free throw and an inside turnaround for her 1,001 point of her career with 3:45 left in the game.

“Ashley has been on fire from the perimeter with 7 threes at Monticello and then she had 6 tonight,” Rice commented on Fowler. “She has made 13 threes in two games and she has not taken 20 or so shots to get them. She has been 15-of-20 for the last two games.”

With the win, Southwestern upped their record to 11-4 and they are 3-0 in district play. The 18th-ranked Lady Warriors will be back in action today at 2 p.m. in a match-up with Louisville Assumption in the Shooting for the Cure Classic at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Arena. Southwestern will travel to Wayne County on Tuesday, Jan.13 for a key district match-up.
