Somerset started slow but got hot late as they defeated Wayne County 7-3 on Senior Night.
The Lady Cardinals were spotted a 3-0 lead and for a while it looked as if they could make it stand. The Lady Jumpers had one hit through the first 4 innings.
That one hit by Samantha Dorsey drove in Emily Ousley to put Somerset on the board.
“I am not sure what happened at the beginning of the game. Maybe the rain delay tightened us up a bit,”said Head Coach David Dorsey. “It took us a while to get going.”
In the 5th Somerset took advantage of Cardinal mistakes. First, Ousley drew a walk. Then, Chelsea Felts, one of two seniors, hammered a double to the wall putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Alianne Tilley hustled down the line after the ball was dropped by the third basemen and two runs came around to score to tie the game.
“We hit the ball hard tonight and even though we don’t have the hit, we kept fighting and fighting,” Dorsey said.
The Jumpers took the lead in the 5th. Ally Childers walked to lead off the inning. Elizabeth Ousley crushed a ball that wound up at the wall for a RBI stand-up double.
Wayne County had more errors than hit and Somerset made them pay.
Up by a run in the 6th, Felts hit a ball a mile high in the air that fell between the shortstop and third basemen driving in another Jumper run.
“Good teams take advantage of those kinds of mistakes,” Dorsey remarked.
Somerset did. Tilley hit a ball in the ground that scored two more run when it was thrown into the outfield. That put Somerset up 7-3.
Paige Gadberry struck out the last batter to end the game and upped the Lady Jumpers’ season record to 15-10.
“I think the team is happy but I know and we know we can be better.”
It was quite an improvement from where Somerset was a year ago and to this team, and the two seniors Somerset said good bye to, the sky is the limit.
“We are happy but we are really looking forward to going up to Clinton County on Monday,” Dorsey said.
Polly West will attend Campbellsville playing soccer. The other senior, Chelsea Felts will play softball in college.
