Society of Character inducts the class of 2007-2008
By STEVE CORNELIUS, CJ Sports Editor

Somerset —
Athletes from each of the three local high schools, and from each sport, were inducted into the 2007-2008 Society of Character on Friday at Somerset High School’s W. B. Jones Auditorium.
The event honored athletes from all sports in their leadership roles for character and sportsmanship.
The student-athletes chosen were known on their respective teams for their courage, perseverance, optimism, good character on and off the playing field and their representation of their team and school in the best way.
“The mission of the Society of Character is to recognize individuals who have exemplified outstanding character and who epitomize the term student-athlete,” Society of Character co-coordinator Bonnie Salyers said, “Each recipient was selected by their coaches based on outstanding character, academic excellence, sportsmanship, and involvement in their school and the community.”
“An honor such as this is a wonderful way for our three high schools and the community to recognize and celebrate the choices and sacrifices these student-athletes have made,” Salyers added. “We believe that what should make the inductees and their families the most proud is not the honor itself, but what they had to do to get it.”
The Society of Character was developed to recognize those individuals who epitomize the term student-athlete.
To be chosen as a member of the Society of Character, student-athletes are evaluated on five criteria:
• commitment to academic excellence;
• commitment to athletic team participation;
• commitment to personal development;
• commitment to being a role-model; and
• commitment to the school community
Each candidate of the Society of Character must have a competitive grade-point average and demonstrate a commitment to their academic success as well as personal development.
Vanderbilt University football defensive coordinator Bruce Fowler was the keynote speaker at this year’s event.
The Noon Rotary Club will be presenting a scholarship to a student-athlete from each high school at the Rotary meeting on May 19, at noon.
