Little Lady Warriors post perfect mark

By STEVE CORNELIUS, CJ Sports Editor
Commonwealth Journal

Somerset Southern Middle School fans said farewell to another group of talented volleyball players on Thursday night during the school’s annual Eighth Grade Night celebration.

For the past several years, the Southern Middle has built a tradition of winning volleyball and great players by accumulating a 36-1 record over the past three seasons.

The 2008 version of the Little Lady Warriors has been exceptionally talented with both the 8th-grade team and 7th-grade team posting perfect records and the 6th-graders only suffering one loss.

“All these girls are extremely motivated to excel on the volleyball court,” Southern Middle volleyball coach Maria Monge said after her eight-graders claimed their 11 consecutive victory. “Volleyball is a relative new sport for the middle school girls and all the girls are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful at the sport.”

“Our success here at Southern Middle and the success at Southwestern High School has really helped in making these girls work that much harder to win. This group of eighth-graders practiced hard six days a week and it paid off with an undefeated record.”

Allison Burton, Haley Calhoun, Chelsea Killman, Ashley Montgomery, Aarti Prabhu, Kaylin Stinson and Johnna Weldy played their final home game before the Southern Middle School crowd, but they are destined to thrill a new group of fans at Southwestern High School in the years to come.

The Little Lady Warriors had little trouble downing the visiting Wayne County team 25-11, 25-16 on the joyful evening at Southern Middle School.

Six players were credited with offensive kills on the night and seven players served up serving aces.

Aarti Prabhu led the team last night with 5 kills and 3 aces. Allison Burton had 3 kills and 4 aces, while Haley Calhoun had 3 kills and an ace. Ashley Montgomery had 2 kills and 2 aces. Erin Cottrell had 2 kills and 2 aces. Johnna Weldy had 2 kills and Kaylin had an ace.
