Runners brave the heat in 12th annual Cool Run

— High temperatures reaching the 90-degree mark did not damper the spirits of the 210 runners, and walkers, who competed in the 12th annual Somernites Cruise Cool Run & Walk at Rocky Hollow Recreation Center.
“Despite the warm weather, the run went well and we had another great turnout,” Cool Run meet organizer Dr. Joe Weigel commented. “The 90-degree temperatures made for a challenging race and the times were a little slower than usual because of the heat.”
“With the help of the National Guards on the course, this was by far our safest event ever,” Weigel said.
Last year, overcast skies, gusty winds and a rainy downpour gave the 2008 competitors some relief from the summer heat. This past Saturday, runners from around the state had to navigate the 5,000-meter downtown course in somewhat sweltering heat.
Obviously, no record times were recorded because of the temperatures. But one particular Cool Run record was demolished when 49-year-old Mike Carlson became the oldest winner of the 12-year-old local event. Carlson, a resident of Mt.Vernon, cruised the course in a winning time of 17:25. The past 11 Cool Run races have been won by college-aged runners.
“This is by far the oldest winner of the event,” Weigel boasted. “It just goes to show you that you can run well at any age.”
Seventeen-year-old Nancy resident Sabastian Rhode finished second with a 17:52.
Somerset 16-year-old Lauren Cornett was the top female finisher with a 23:27 clocking.
James Bullen, 47, won the master male division, while Somerset’s Carrie Altmaier, 49, won the masters female division.
Ken Roark, 59, won the grandmaster male division, while Vicky Collette, 55, won the grandmaster female division.
Baylor Mattingly, Houstonville, was the youngest competitor at six years old, and Sawyer Johnson, Barbourville, was the oldest competitor at 77 years old.
Somerset resident George Gill, 52, won his age division with a 22:43 clocking, but the local business owner claims that running has changed his life in many different ways.
“Obviously, running has made me a much healthier person,” Gill said. “I also run as a stress reliever. I run 5-days-a-week and I usually run in the middle of the day just to get away from work for 30 to 45 minutes.”
In the past four years since Gill took up running, he has competed in four half-marathons and has competed in many 5K races throughout the region.
“George took up running as a middle-aged male, and now running has become a huge part of his life,” Weigel said. “George took up running to improve his health. Now, he loves to run and he is a fierce competitor in road races.”
