Pulaski All-Stars bounce back with huge win

By STEVE CORNELIUS, CJ Sports Editor
Commonwealth Journal

Burnside h Laurel, the Pulaski All-Stars came back strong in their 12-2, 5-inning win over Wayne County in the loser’s bracket of the 9 & 10 year old Little League District Tournament at Cole Park on Wednesday.

Holding a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Pulaski exploded for five runs in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule. Pulaski’s Brad Burton got things started in the fifth when he reached base on an infield single to score Conner Nelson from third. The game broke wide open when Hunter Cromer hit a deep fly ball that was misplayed by the Wayne County outfielder allowing three runs to score — Dalton Barren, Cameron Smith and Burton. Then, Cromer scored off a Wayne County wild pitch to end the lopsided game.

Pulaski held on to a slim 2-1 lead through the first 2 1/2 innings, but in the bottom of the third the local all-stars scored four runs off four Wayne County errors. In the third, Burton scored off an errant throw from the catcher back to the pitcher. Devin Vaught had an RBI ground out to plate Logan Huntsman. Then, Jarred Ferris hit a line shot over the left field fence for a two-run homer that scored himself and Michael Dobbs.

In the first inning, Pulaski’s Vaught had a two-run homer of his own after he sent one over the left field fence to plate Burton.

Pulaski picked up one run in the fourth when Huntsman triple to the left center gap to score Caleb New.

Huntsman, also picked up the win on the mound in four innings of work to strike out five batters and only allowing one run. Farris got the save in one inning of work.

Pulaski was led in hitting by Farris, who went 2-for-3 with a homer and drove in two runs. Burton went 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in a run. Vaught had a homer and drove in three runs.

Pulaski played again last night in the semifinals of the loser’s bracket.
