Warriors too much for North Laurel

Somerset — There were plenty of highlights Monday night as Southwestern shutout North Laurel 6-0 on The Plains.

The scoring started early for the Warriors.

Just six minutes into the game, Southwestern went up 1-0 with a penalty kick by Jeremy Nissen. And hat was just the beginning of the first half scoring.

Six minutes later Nicklas Nielsen set up Josh Daulton, who used his head for the goal to put the Warriors up 2-0.

The Jaguars’ goal keeper, Caleb Mosley played a great game to spite giving up 6 goals. Early in the first half he did everything he could to keep his team in the game. He saved two shots in less than a minute in his attempt to keep the damage to a minimum.

“He played a great a game. We have to do a better job of getting the ball out of there but I thought he played well” said North Laurel's head coach Becky Woodworth.

Mosley may have played great, but the Warriors were too much on this night. In the first half, Southwestern out shot North Laurel 18-1, including a goal by Tyler Guillem who had his back turn to the goal and kicked in the backwards shot from a few yards out.

“We wanted to get off to a really quick start here tonight,” said Warriors coach James Ray after the game. “One of our goals is to defend our home field and this being the first game and in front of a nice crowd, we wanted to get started fast."

For North Laurel, they look at this game as a learning experience. In spite of falling behind 4-0 in the first half, they were able to play much better in the second half.

“We did give up two goals in the second half, but I thought the kids did a better job on talking and getting into better position,” said Woodworth.

Southwestern had six different players scoring all six goals. The depth really showed on the field Monday night.

“We did this in the Bluegrass State Games, where we won bronze,” Ray said. “We had a bunch of different players scoring goals. We have good players who at anytime can score a goal. We are a deep team.”

The Warriors dress 14 seniors and eight juniors, and are constantly showing a different look with non-stop substitutions.

With a third place finish in the State Games and an unblemished preseason record, Warrior coach James Ray is now sporting some uncharacteristic facial hair in the form of a beard.

“I told the team I would not shave until we lost our first game,” Ray joked. “We have a tough schedule ahead of us and we have not backed down from anyone in our scheduling this year.”

“I hope this beard is still on my face in October,” Ray said with a grin.

The Warriors, who have just five homes games on the schedule, won’t get back on The Plains again until Sept. 4, when they host Danville.

The Warriors will enjoy eight days off before they travel to Madison Central on Tuesday, August 26. The Jags head back into Pulaski County to take on the Maroons on Saturday, Aug. 23.
