Lady Warriors dominate Pulaski

By STEVE CORNELIUS, CJ Sports Editor
Commonwealth Journal

Somerset With no offensive kills in the first game, the Pulaski Lady Maroons’ volleyball team could do little to offset Southwestern’s game-high 19 kills in the Lady Warriors’ 2-0 (25-9, 25-15) district cross-town win at the Wigwam on Thursday night.

“We actually came ready to play tonight and this was our best effort we have given all season,” Southwestern coach James Cox said. “We did almost everything the right way and the score shows that because Pulaski is a good team and have been improving with every game.”

Southwestern jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, withstood a small Pulaski three-point rally, and then scored the next 9 consecutive points, via 4 kills by Katy Broussard, to expand their first game lead to 15-4.

Down the stretch of game one, kills by Kotey Crowe, Kelsey Roberts, Cassie Thompson and Broussard helped the Lady Warriors secure a 25-9 win in the first battle.

“We couldn’t pass, we couldn’t set, we couldn’t hit and we couldn’t serve in the first game,” Pulaski coach Teresa Combs said. “Basically, if you can’t do any of those things, you are not going to be very productive.”

After falling behind 9-4 in the second game, Pulaski battled back with kills by Cara Boyd, Heather Ping and Brooke Cable to close Southwestern’s lead to 17-13. Thompson connected on two kills, combined with five unforced errors by Pulaski, vaulted the Lady Warriors to a 22-14 game two lead.

Two kills by Broussard and another by Brittany Whitaker finished up the Lady Maroons in a 2-0 clean sweep by the Lady Warriors.

“This is a big time win for us because we go 2-0 in the district and we did this not going full strength,” Cox said. “With Brooke Sexton out with an injury, a couple of my girls stepped up and had their best night of the season That is what it is about being part of a team.”

Southwestern (17-1, 2-0) will take on the powerful Lady Cardinals of South Laurel on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the Wigwam. Pulaski (1-6, 0-3) will host North Laurel on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
