Maroons tie Madison Southern

Somerset —
Pulaski seniors Phillip Davis, Corey Elliott and Daniel Woodcock have always been fighters on the soccer field and never gave up.
Thursday night, the senior trio led the Maroons back from two deficits in a 2-2 deadlock with Madison Southern on Senior Night at Pulaski County High School.
Pulaski found themselves down by a goal on two different occasions throughout the first half, and both times Pulaski responded with a game-tying score.
Madison Southern struck first in only the fifth minute of the game when David Euge scored on a free kick from 10 yards out.
However, seven minutes later Pulaski responded with an answer.
Pulaski sophomore Zach Taylor, who had missed most of the season with an injury, crossed to fellow sophomore Matt Williams, who charged the goal from the left side. Williams scored at-goal to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 31st minute Madison Southern’s Chad Wheaton crossed to John Curtis, who scored off an header to put the Eagles back on top at 2-1.
And while Pulaski did come back to tie the game later in the first half, their second actual scoring attempt was called off on a kicking infraction.
At the 34-minute mark, Williams put the ball into the net from six yards out, only to have the goal called off for a ‘high kick’ violation. The call caused some disturbance among the fans seated behind the west goal, forcing officials to move the fans into the adjacent fenced-in bleacher area.
Once order was restored on the field, Pulaski made their next goal attempt count for real.
In the 38th minute Phillip Davis sent a free kick, from just inside the midfield mark, deep into the penalty box. Positioned in front of the goal, Zach Taylor headed the ball in for the Maroons’ second score of the game and the 2-2 tie.
“In our minds, this game was a win for us because we did score more goals than the other team,” Pulaski coach Jose Barron reasoned. “Two goals counted and one didn’t count. I guess you have to go by what’s on the scoreboard and far as that goes we did tie.”
Both teams had several attempts to break the deadlock in the second half, but the last 40 minutes ended without another score and left the game a draw.
Pulaski’s Taylor had a missed 24-yard free kick attempt in the 78th minute.
“This was really a physical game and it was nice to have the student body out here tonight supporting the team and our seniors,” Barron commented
Pulaski (8-6-1) will travel to Corbin on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
