Somerset —
A strong offense and a stingy defense helped the Southern Braves in a 18-0 win over Burnside in the Junior PCYFL Super Bowl on Saturday at Pulaski County High School.
Southern’s Trevor Brock accounted for two of the Braves’ three touchdowns and he rushed for 80 yards on the night.
Brock put the Braves on the board late in the second quarter on a 7-yard touchdown run. Zack Morocco put Southern in scoring position after a 22-yard run.
Both defenses played strong in the opening half, but Southern’s Brock began to find holes in the General defense early in the second half. Brock had a 16-yard run to put the ball inside the Generals’ 40-yard line. Then, Brock scored his second touchdown on a 38-yard run to put the Braves up 12-0 with 6:35 left in the third quarter.
The Generals fumbled the ball away on their next two possessions, putting a halt to any chance of a comeback. Southern’s Austin Upchurch and Brock recovered the football on the two Generals’ turnovers.
Early in the final quarter, Southern put the game away when Upchurch ran the ball in for a touchdown from three yard out to give the Braves a 18-0 win.
“Burnside is a tough team and they have a great offense and they played a great season,” Southern coach Kenny Dyesinger said. “Our boys brought the intensity today and came away with a win.”
“These boys have been a dedicated group and they have been at this since July, when they started practicing,” Dyesinger said. “They have had a great season from our running backs to our defensive backs to our lineman. This season has been a total team effort. The Southern Braves deserved to win, they gave it 110 percent and they are a good bunch of boys.”
Offensively, the Braves were led by Brock with 80 yards, Upchurch with 25 yards, Cole Dyesinger with 26 yards, Morocco with 26 yards and Austin King with 6 yards.
Offensively for Burnside, Daulton Huling had 33 yards rushing, Drew Sawyers had 12 yards, Hagen Hubbard had 11 yards and John Bingham had 3 yards.
Defensively, the Braves were led by Morocco with 10 tackles, Landon Fields with 7 tackles, Kody Price with 6 tackles, Jacob West with 6 tackles, Bradley Helton with 4 tackles, Upchurch with 4 tackles, Cameron Dobbs with 4 tackles, Brock with 3 tackles, Chad Nolen with 3 tackles, and Jimmy Purdue and Isaac Hardwick had 2 tackles apiece.
For the Generals, Jacob Mounce had 5 tackles, Sawyers had 4 tackles, Hubbard had 3 tackles, Daniel Walden had 3 tackles and Huling had 2 tackles.
