Brandi Abrams named Player of the Year

Commonwealth Journal Girls Soccer All-County Team

Somerset — Southwestern finished with a combined 3-0 record in their meetings against Pulaski County and Somerset in the 2013 high school girls soccer season.

In part to that perfect record against local competition, the Southwestern Lady Warriors have five members on this year’s edition of the Commonwealth Journal All-County Girls Soccer Team, including player of the year, Brandi Abrams.

Of the 9 players on this year’s all-county team, five players come from Southwestern, while there are two players each from Somerset and Pulaski County. There are four returning members from last season’s all-county squad.

Joining Abrams from the Lady Warriors on this year’s all-county squad are teammates Hanna Ratliff, Kaylee Shepherd, Katherine Citak, and Kaylee Shepherd.

Brandi Abrams, a senior, tallied 28 goals and had 10 assists in her first and only season at Southwestern. Abrams, who was also named First Team All-Region, tallied 17 of those 28 goals in the first five games of the year.

Junior teammate Hanna Ratliff tied Abrams with 28 goals on the season. Ratliff also had 8 assists on the year and was chosen as First Team All-Region. This is Ratliff’s first selection to the all-county team.

Four-year starter and goalkeeper Kaylee Shepherd has been a mainstay for the ‘Blue and Orange’ over the course of the past few seasons for the Lady Warriors. Shepherd, who never missed a start for head coach Nick Stringer, tallied 9 shutouts and gave up an average of 1.3 goals per match this season.

The 2012 Commonwealth Journal Girls Soccer Player of the Year Katherine Citak joins the all-county squad once again. Citak, who was named an honorable mention for the All-Region team, netted 7 goals and had a lone assist this past season.

Nicole Upchurch’s ‘Fearless’ play allowed her to score 7 goals and tally 3 assists this past season. Upchurch made a big impact on the squad despite missing the entire preseason and the first five games of the regular season due to a serious medical condition.

The Pulaski County Lady Maroons finished the season with an overall mark of 8-12-1, but did defeat Somerset in the 47th District Championship game by a 1-0 margin. A pair of Lady Maroon players – Ashley Johnson and Carlee Smith – qualify for the all-county squad for the first time in their careers.

Ashley Johnson, a senior defender for Pulaski County, had 7 goals and 3 assists this past season. Johnson, who served as the Lady Maroons’ co-captain, was named to the 47th District All-District squad.

Carlee Smith led the way for the Lady Maroons this past season with team highs in goals (20) and assists (8). The Pulaski County forward was chosen to the 47th District All-District team, as well.

Erin Mullins, in her first year at the helm, led the Somerset Lady Jumpers to a record of 10-11-1. Topanga Brown and Maci New are the representatives from the Lady Jumpers on this season’s all-county team.

Brown, in goal, had 8 shutouts for Somerset this past season. This is Brown’s second consecutive selection to the all-county team.

New, a senior, has been a standout player, on both offense and defense, for the Lady Jumpers over the course of her career at Somerset.
