Cheuvront, Skidmore, Hines garner prep gridiron post-season honors

Somerset — Somerset High School senior offensive lineman Kagen Skidmore has been named District Most Valuable Player for 2013. He is the only lineman in the entire class to be so named. His fellow honorees include three quarterbacks, two running backs, and two wide receivers.

The award is given by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association. Trophies will be presented at halftime of the Class 2A championship game on Dec. 7, along with the announcement of the 2A MVP.

Somerset head coach Robbie Lucas expressed his pride in Skidmore’s achievement.

“Kagen is obviously extremely talented. At 6’2” 295 he has a prototypical football build,” Lucas said. “He is blessed with size, speed, quickness, and strength. He has started to play the best football of his career. He is playing at a very high level. The scary thing about his play is that he just starting to reach his potential. As good a football player he is an even better student. He is a big reason behind our team’s success. I personally like Kagen’s nasty streak. He is one of the best to come out of Somerset.”

“I’m really excited that I won this award,” Skidmore said. “And I know it’ll have my name on it, but, you know, it belongs just as much to the guy on my left and the guy on my right. We all work hard every day, and I can’t really say I deserve it any more than any one of them do. And you know, even the guys in the skill positions have a piece of this. If they weren’t there scoring the points, nobody would be looking at me anyway.

And speaking of skill position, Skidmore’s teammate at wide receiver, Cam Cheuvront will join him in this year’s post season All Star Bowl Game dubbed “Best of the Bluegrass.” The game pits the best team the selecting coaches can field from the state in a classic game against the combined all stars from Louisville.

As of the time of the writing of this story, Cheuvront is third in Class 2A in receiving yards, despite the fact that Somerset only played a 9-game regular season. One of the two players who have more yards than Cheuvront is Peyton Case of Betsy Layne, whose team is now out of competition for the year. The other, Nate McCoy of Gallatin County was still in competition Friday night. Cheuvront was 7th in overall yardage, a statistic that is likely to change before the final figures are entered for the season.

The 2013 Best of the Bluegrass all star game will be on Sunday December 15th at St. Xavier HS, Louisville.  Admission will be $10.00 with 6 and under free.  The state’s team will be coached by John Petett, Monroe Co HS.

The Greater Louisville Football team will be announced later.

Pulaski County High School head football coach Johnny Hines was named the Class 5A District 7 Coach of the Year.

Hines, in his 15th season at Pulaski, had his best-ever year by leading the Maroons to district and region championship titles with a perfect 13-0 record.

Hines also collected his 100th win this season. Hines has led Pulaski teams to four district titles and two region titles.

Hines will be given his award by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association. Trophies will be presented at halftime of the Class 5A championship game on Dec. 7.
