Hazard holds off Jumpers, 32-28

Hazard — In a contest with eight lead changes, Somerset found themselves on the short end with a 32-28 loss to Hazard High School. The loss marked the third defeat for the Briar Jumpers this season and it marked their first loss to Hazard since 1957.

Somerset held a slim 28-26 lead with 5:28 left in the game after Castle Hatcher connected with Cam Cheuvront for a 5-yard TD pass play.

But Hazard’s Brandon Jones broke for a 69-yard TD run on the Bulldogs’ next offensive series to put his team up 32-28. On the night,  Bulldogs running back Jones rushed for 237 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Somerset (1-3) got the ball back with two minutes left in the game and were driving the ball downfield, but an interception put an end to a potential Briar Jumper comeback.

For the game, Hatcher and Cheuvront teamed up for two touchdown pass plays and Bryson Jones scored a TD on a 1-yard run. Somerset kicker Alex Franklin hit three field goals from distances of 36, 22 and 38.

Hatcher threw 11-of-19 for 161 yards with 2 TDs. Cheuvront caught 4 passes for 51 yards and scored 2 TDs. Braiden McWilliams had 8 carries for 81 yards, and Bryson Jones rushed for 58 yards on 9 carries.
