Somerset ends 10-year losing streak to Ads

Jumpers down Danville 7-1 to claim All “A” Region crown, advance to Sectionals

Somerset — It had been 10 long years since the Somerset boys soccer team had ever beaten Danville High School.

It had been 10 long years since the Briar Jumpers got a chance to advance on to the All “A” Classic State Soccer Tournament.

But after a decade of losing to the Admirals, Somerset finally got sweet revenge in a 7-1 win over the Admirals in the Region Finals of the All “A” on Monday night at Clara Morrow Field.

“This is a game that we definitely wanted to win, we also wanted to put an end to that losing streak of the last 10 years as well,” Somerset head coach Steve Wallace remarked. “We came out wanting to play, we made opportunities but we didn’t make some of the best decisions. Austin (Hill) is such a good player and when he makes good decisions we are so much better.”

Even despite the easy 7-1 Somerset win on Monday night, the game didn’t come easy for either team as the game actually started last Thursday, but due to lightening, the original game only lasted four minutes until it was postponed.

On Thursday, Somerset sophomore Carlos Canella scored from close range in the second minute of the game to put the Jumpers up 1-0.

But the Jumpers had to wait 10 years and another four days to finally finished off the Admirals and pout and end to a decade old losing streak to their All “A” counterparts.

The game resumed on Monday night with the Jumpers leading 1-0 and 36 minutes left in the opening half.

Somerset didn’t score another goal until the 31st minute of the half. Austin Hill took a corner kick and Alex Walters was in the right place at the right time, as he headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 Jumper lead.

The third goal came in the final minute of the half, Hill crossed the ball to Canella, who chested the ball into the net.

“We played hard,” Wallace said. “We didn’t play smart the whole time but we continued to play hard throughout the game. We gave up several kicks from physical play, which I like but you have to know where you are and that’s why (Danville) was able to score. We gave them a free kick in the box.”

In the second half it took the Jumpers awhile to score, but they scored two goals back-to-back. Kevin Heurman scored the forth goal for Somerset. Immediately after the ball was put back in play, Hill scored to put Somerset up 5-0.

In the 59th minute of the game, the Admirals received a penalty kick inside the goalie box scoring their only goal of the game.

In the 73rd minute of the game, Heurman scored his second goal of the game coming off an assist by Hill.

Somerset scored their final goal of the game in the 76th minute, as sophomore Jaron Richards scored with an assist from Hill.

“We play West Jessamine (last night) and they are probably the best team in our region,” began Wallace. “We also have to prepare for Lexington Christian in a few days for the sectional finals, which will be played next Monday. Making it to the Class A State was a big goal we had set for this season.”

Hill had five assists in the game he played a part in every goal that was scored by the Jumpers. The Jumpers are now 7-1-2, and will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 24 to play George Rogers Clark.
