Local student-athletes earn honors

Somerset —

The 2013 high school football season may be over with, but the postseason awards are continuing to roll in for local football players and coaches.
A pair of local players, along with a pair of local coaches, earned several awards worth mentioning over the course of this week.
Pulaski County sophomore quarterback Riley Hall was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year on the Clear Channel/Commonwealth Journal All-County Football Team for the second season in a row. On Tuesday, the sophomore was the only local player on the Louisville Courier-Journal's All-State Team, being chosen chosen as an honorable mention at the quarterback position.
To end the week, Hall earned a pair of awards on the WYMT All-Mountain Football Team, being tabbed as the Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year and a First-Team selection at the quarterback position.
In 2013, Hall went 223 of 350 through the air for 2,922 yards and 35 touchdowns. On the ground, the Maroon sophomore ran for 962 yards and 5 touchdowns on 106 carries.
Cam Cheuvront, a senior wide receiver at Somerset, was first selected to the Clear Channel/Commonwealth Journal All-County Football Team for a stellar 2013 season. The Jumper senior was tabbed as the Class 2A Offensive Player of the Year and was chosen to the First-Team at the wide out position.
Cheuvront, who was chosen to play in the Battle of the Bluegrass Bowl, caught 68 passes in 2013 for 1,171 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Jumper senior carried the ball on 6 occasions for 61 yards.
Maroon head coach Johnny Hines was chosen as the WYMT All-Mountain Class 5A Coach of the Year. Hines led the Maroons to a 14-1 record and a state championship game appearance, where they fell to Bowling Green. Pulaski County won their fourth district title in 5 seasons and their regional championship in school history.
Somerset head coach Robbie Lucas racked up the WYMT All-Mountain Class 2A Coach of the Year. The Jumpers, who went 8-5 this season, won another district title and their fifth regional title in a row under Lucas.

After last year’s 13-3 loss to Mercer County in the 12th Region Baseball Championship game, Southwestern made it a priority to make a trip back to the title game in 2014.

  • Jumpers Somerset advances to 12th Region Finals

Over the course of the past four seasons, Somerset's senior class had not yet tasted victory over long-time rival Danville. In fact, the Jumpers hadn’t won a game against Paul Morse and company since the 2009 season.
That all changed on Tuesday night at West Jessamine, as the Briar Jumpers scored two late runs to come away with a hard-fought, 6-5 win over the Danville Admirals.
