Somerset rallies to down Lady Rebels

Commonwealth Journal

Mt. Vernon — The best time to hit your best is in the postseason.

That was the case for the Somerset Lady Jumpers on Monday night, as they combined for 13 hits in a five-inning, 14-4 rout over Casey County in the first round of the 47th District Softball Tournament at Rockcastle County High School.

David Dorsey, the veteran head coach of the Lady Jumpers, felt like his time was due at the plate. Dorsey was right.

“We were due to hit the ball,” began Dorsey. “We had gone 12 games were had maybe three or four hits per game. We got out to an early lead tonight and were able to build from there. These girls deserved the win tonight.”

The Lady Jumpers got the ball rolling in the opening frame, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after Alyssa Richardson scored her first run of the evening on a wild pitch. Richardson would score three more times on the night.

Casey County took the lead in the top of second inning, scoring three runs on two hits and a Lady Jumper error. After giving up a run in the first inning, the Lady Rebels now found themselves out front, 3-1.

Somerset responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the contest up at 3-3. Emily Spears (double) scored on an error and Richardson (walk) reached home on a single from Brynlee Bigelow.

The Lady Jumpers plated 11 runs over the course of the next two innings (five in the third and six in the fourth) to get a commanding lead over Casey County. During that big momentum shift, Somerset had home runs from Jordan LaFavers and Haley Ellison, along with a triple from Bigelow.

Somerset would hold on to win the game by a ten-run margin, earning themselves a spot in the district championship game and a stake in next week’s 12th Region Softball Tournament.

Dorsey and company are glad to be back in the regional tournament after failing to make it a season ago.

“After being out of the regional tournament last season, it feels good to be back in it,” told the veteran SHS coach. “After losing 12 of our last 16 games, it feels good to get a win like this. It was great to see all the fan support and the administration here tonight.”

Raegan Henderson led the way for Somerset on the night, finishing with three hits, which included a pair of doubles. Bigelow, LaFavers, Spears, and Lauren Hibbard all had two hits apiece.

Bigelow finished with a game-high three RBI’s, while Chloe Henderson chimed in with two RBI’s of her own.

On the mound, LaFavers was the winner in this one. LaFavers gave up four runs on five hits and had six strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Lady Jumpers squared off with crosstown rival Pulaski County in last night’s district championship game at Rockcastle County High School. Look for details of that title game in Thursday’s sports section.
