Warriors get revenge on Colts

Southwestern downs West Jessamine in rematch

Somerset — The Southwestern High School Warriors matched up against West Jessamine on Tuesday night for the second time this season.

The first time was in the Lake Cumberland Holiday Hoops Classic, where the Colts won a close oneagainst the Warriors –  58-55.

The second game between these two teams took place in the Wigwam on Tuesday night, with  Southwestern winning 80-71.

West Jessamine’s Daulton Peters scored the game high of 27 points, with 19 of those in the first half.

“Last game we were up by 14 and let them (West) hit three threes and it was over fast,” stated Warrior’s coach Steve Wright. “Tonight they cut our lead to five but we were more in control. We are both better teams than we were the last time we met.”

It was a high scoring first quarter but the Warriors scored first and held on to that lead the whole game. Adam Isaacs scored the first points of the night with a shot just inside the arc. Peters got his team on the board with a midrange jump shot making the score two all, the only tie of the game. Hunter Cromer was able to get an offensive rebound and put it back in to get the lead back.

The next trip down Cromer got another offensive board and was fouled on the put back but made both free throws. Peters kept the Colts close with his 13 points in the quarter. The Warriors hit five threes in the opening quarter only giving up one. The score at the end of the first period was 27-20.

Southwestern forced two turnovers early in the quarter but almost two minutes in the quarter passed before Justin Edwards scored the first basket. Cromer got two more offensive boards giving him four in the first half. Cromer fouled Siah Holifield on the drive and he hit both free throws. The Warriors led by 11 at the end of the first half the score was 43-32.

Steven Fitzgerald scored the first points of the third quarter. The Warriors largest lead of the game was obtained in the quarter at 15 points at 54-39, thanks to a three from Danny Butt. Dylan Gaskins fouled Landon Adkins, he hit the second free throw. At the end of the third the Colts trailed by 12, 56-44.

In the fourth quarter the Colts started to chip away at Southwestern’s lead coming within five points of the Warriors was the closest that they came. Will Henderson who hit two big shots for West Jessamine the last time that these teams met scored 10 points in the fourth quarter hitting two threes. Brooks Ely missed his first free throw, that would have cut the score to four if he had of made both.

The Warriors led by five with 28 seconds to go in the game 76-71. Butt scored two baskets late in the game for Southwestern to put the score out of reach as the time ran out. The final score of the game was 80-71.

With this win the Warriors are now 16-3 on the season. The Colts move to 13-8 on the season. The Warriors will be returning home on Friday night to take on the Cardinals in a district match up.

“It’s a district seed game, we are more prepared to play them this time,” Wright began. “We had several players who had never really been in that kind of atmosphere but we have gotten better and I’m sure they have too.”

WEST JESSAMINE (13-8) – Peters 27, Henderson 12, Ely 10, Brooks 7, Adkins 7, Holifield 6, Crouse 2.

SOUTHWESTERN (16-3) – Cromer 16, Butt 15, Edwards 14, Gaskins 12, Isaacs 12, Fitzgerald 9, Miller 2.
