Losers of four of their last six games, the Somerset Lady Jumper softball team welcomed in the perfect opponent on Tuesday afternoon — on paper at least.
David Dorsey’s club had hit a rough patch of sorts over the past week, yet Somerset came into Tuesday’s 47th District matchup against Rockcastle County still above the .500 mark with an 8-7 record, while a struggling Lady Rocket squad limped into this matchup with only a 3-11 mark for the season.
On paper at least, Somerset looked to be a prohibitive favorite over its 47th District foe on Tuesday afternoon, and on the field, it was much of the same as David Dorsey’s club rolled to an 11-0 victory over Rockcastle County in only five innings.
The Lady Jumpers broke open a close game by plating four runs in the home half of the third frame, while tacking on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and that would be all the run support that freshman Jordan Lafavers would need on this night.
The young Somerset pitcher went the distance, facing just two hitters over the minimum in her five innings of work.
Lafavers retired the first eight hitters she faced, while only allowing a two-out single in the third inning to Amber Woodall and a leadoff single by Cheyenne Gilliam in the top half of the fourth.
Other than those two hits, Lafavers kept the Rockcastle County bats silent all night long, while fanning three hitters in her five inning stint, on a night when Dorsey’s club ended a modest, two-game losing slide while improving to a perfect 2-0 in league play.
“Jordan throws strikes and she just doesn’t walk anybody,” stated a very happy Dorsey after his club improved to 9-7 on the season with the shutout win over The Rock.
“Her ball has a little pop on it and she throws it harder than you might think,” added the SHS coach. “She’s very coachable and she’s just like one of my daughters. She’s a special kid.”
Rockcastle’s Hailey Harper took the loss for the Lady Rockets, as she allowed her first run to Somerset in the bottom of the second frame, thanks to an RBI groundout from Lauren Hibbard.
However, there would be a lot more to come from the Lady Jumpers.
An RBI double by Bethany Edwards, a wild pitch from Harper that allowed another run to score, and a two-run single by catcher Brynlee Bigelow extended the Somerset lead to 5-0 through three innings of play, before the Lady Jumpers ended the suspense by plating six more runs off of Harper in the home half of the fourth frame.
Edwards doubled in a pair of runs in that decisive fourth inning, Amanda Haynes singled home a run, Bigelow added a run-scoring single, and Chloe Henderson doubled in two more runs, giving the Lady Jumpers 10 hits in four innings off of Harper and an 11-0 lead.
Lafavers meanwhile retired the side in order in the fifth to nail down win number nine on the season for the victorious Lady Jumpers.
“We turned our first double play tonight, and Bethany (Edwards) continued her hot streak tonight, and she hit the ball very good,” Dorsey stated. “Amanda (Haynes) hit the ball hard tonight, and she had been a little bit of a slump, so that was good to see. And, Lauren Rice hit the ball hard, and she’s got to hit it for us to win.”
With the win, Somerset moved to the most important number of all — a perfect 2-0 record inside district play — a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by the Lady Jumpers head coach.
“It doesn’t matter who it is — at the end of the day you want to win all of your district games and we’re now 2-0 in the district,” stated Dorsey.
“We got to Casey County on Thursday and see what we can do and go from there,” Dorsey added.
Somerset will return home on Saturday afternoon hosting the Somerset Invitational.
