McKala Blevins signs with St. Catharine

Somerset — Pulaski County’s former catcher McKala Blevins recently signed to continue her softball career at St. Catharine College.

Blevins played her senior year under new coach Kevin Mckee. The Lady maroons did not have the success they wanted but Blevins had a pretty good year batting .351. She also hit 27 doubles, 40 RBIs, and two homeruns this season.

“Blevins has a lot of talent and she has a strong arm with the ability to throw to any bag from her knee,” stated Mckee. “She is also able to hit the ball with some power. St. Catharine’s will help her to learn a lot about her game.”

The Lady Maroons finished the season 16-17-1 but what was more heart breaking was the loss they took in the first round of district to Casey County who was 8-18 at the time. Blevins was the only Pulaski player who got a hit that game and she had a double and a homerun but her efforts came a little to late in the game.

“I’m really excited that I have this opportunity to go on to college and continue playing the game that I love,” began Blevins. “I have been playing this game since I was a little kid and to finally have all that hard work and time I put into it pay off, it’s great!”

St. Catharine’s already has one Pulaski Alumni playing for them, Coach McKee’s daughter Brittany Mckee, who singed in 2012. St Catharine’s struggled last year finishing the season with a 22-30 record overall and a 9-21 conference record.

Midway through the season last year the Lady Patriots went on a 10 game losing streak.

“Brittany played a big role in landing McKala. We had been looking at catchers and we had seen her play before. We knew that she was a strong player,” stated assistant coach Felicia Smith. “We are at a building stage right now and the players that we have gotten in the last couple years have really helped us to build the program”

McKee added, “I think St. Catharine’s is getting a good player and I’m tickled to death she signed. She will be missed. I didn’t have the opportunity to coach her for long but did get to see how much she grew as a catcher since her freshman year. She will be hard to replace.”
