Somerset — On Monday night, the Lake Cumberland All-Stars had their way with the Rockcastle County All-Stars in the opening game of the 2013 Cal Ripken 12U 46/60 District 5 Tournament on Hinkle Field at the Ward Correll Sports Complex.

A night later, it was Rockcastle County who had their way with Lake Cumberland, as they came away with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the local Lake Cumberland team, the loss eliminated them from the district tournament and their chance to move on to the Cal Ripken State Tournament.

Rockcastle County, the visiting team on the scoreboard, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame on the strength of a two-run home run from Cayden Shaver. Jimmy Sharp would tally their third run of the inning on a pair of Lake Cumberland errors.

Lake Cumberland would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, cutting the Rockcastle County lead to a lone run at 3-2. Matthew Pike, who reached on a single, scored on a sacrifice from Chaney Ruby and Jackson Cooper scored on an error.

In the following frame, Lake Cumberland plated two more runs to grab a 4-3 advantage over the squad from Mt. Vernon. Jordan Chapman tied the game up at 3-3 after scoring on an RBI single from Matthew Pike. Micah Mullins, after reaching on a single, gave Lake Cumberland a one-run lead after reaching home on a walk.

Homestanding Lake Cumberland, unfortunately, would not score another run in the game, while Rockcastle County plated a run in each the fourth and fifth inning to retake the lead from Lake Cumberland and come away with the victory.

For Lake Cumberland, Pike led the charge with a team-high two hits. Mullins and Caleb Bechard each chimed in with a lone hit for Lake Cumberland, who finished with four hits on the night. Lipscomb came up with an RBI in the game.

Cooper, who went the distance for Lake Cumberland, was saddled with the loss. In six innings on the hill, Cooper had eight strikeouts.

Victorious Rockcastle County was led at the dish by Shaver, Javen Hasty, and Keaton Renfro, who all had two hits apiece in the one-run win over Lake Cumberland. Shaver and Hasty had home runs, while Renfro had a double.
