SHS gets 4-2 win over Clay County on Monday

Somerset —

After falling to West Jessamine by a score of 6-4 on Saturday afternoon, Somerset bounced back with a 4-2 win over Clay County on Monday night at Charlie Taylor Field.
The Briar Jumpers, who were paced by a nice evening at the plate and a strong outing from a trio of pitchers, upped their record to 5-2 with the hard-fought, two-run win over the Tigers of Clay County.
Zack Dishman, who pitched the first three innings for the Jumpers, earned the victory. Brian Rutherford provided his services in the following three innings. Logan Combs came in and closed up shop for Somerset in the seventh inning.
Veteran Jumper baseball coach Phil Grundy was pleased with the pitching performance from Z. Dishman, Rutherford, and Combs.
“Our pitchers battled out there tonight,” told Grundy. “Zack Dishman was aggressive, threw strikes, and had a good outing. Brian came in and did exactly what he expected him to do, which was throw strikes. Logan Combs has electric stuff – he’s going to be a good one.”
Clay County struck first in the ballgame, plating two runs in the top of the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead over the Jumpers. The Tigers fired on all cylinders in the second frame, having five hits. Clay County, however, would manage to have only one hit in the next five innings.
Somerset responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame to cut the Clay County lead to a lone run at 2-1. An Isaac Stephens RBI single would do the trick for the Jumpers in the frame.
The Jumpers scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 advantage over Clay County. Jacob Pelston and Caleb Dockery (pinch running for Charlie Dishman) both scored runs for Somerset in the inning.
