Somerset blanks Raiders, 15-0

Somerset sophomore Chandler Purcell throws no-hitter, hits 2 RBI

Somerset — Somerset sophomore Chandler Purcell brought his 'A' game to the ballpark on Tuesday night.

Purcell had a big night for the Briar Jumpers on Tuesday night, both on the mound and at the plate. In part to the stellar play from Purcell, the Jumpers dismantled visiting McCreary Central, downing them in five innings by a score of 15-0 at Charlie Taylor Field.

On the hill, Purcell gave up zero hits and had seven strikeouts in five innings, meaning he would finish the contest with a no-hitter. At the dish, the Somerset sophomore had two doubles and a pair of RBI’s.

Veteran Somerset baseball coach Phil Grundy feels that Purcell will make a huge impact for the Jumpers over the course of the 2013 season.

“Chandler doesn’t necessarily like to pitch, but we’ve got to have him pitch for us,” told Grundy. “He’s pitched well every time we have brought him in this year. That was his first start, so I look for great things out of him this season. He’s playing well at shortstop, he’s playing well in the outfield, and he’s hitting the ball well.”

Somerset scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, and nine in the third, to take the game by a score of 15-0. With the huge victory over the visiting Raiders, the Briar Jumpers upped their overall record to 6-4 on the year.

The Jumpers tallied four runs in the opening inning off of two hits and three errors from McCreary Central. The Raiders struggled from the get-go, as they finished with nine errors on the night.

Grundy and crew added two runs in the third frame, allowing them to grab a 6-0 lead over McCreary Central. Somerset’s runs would come off of a double from Charlie Dishman and a sacrifice fly from Bryson Jones.

In the bottom half of the third frame, Somerset sent 15 batters to the plate in an inning that they scored nine runs off of four hits and five McCreary Central errors. When the dust had settled from the inning, the Jumpers led the Raiders by a lopsided score of 15-0.

Addison Thompson and Purcell led the way for the Jumpers with two hits each. Purcell had two doubles, while Thompson finished with a lone double. Dishman, Jones, Logan Ramsey, and Will Lange, all chimed in with a hit for the ‘Purple and Gold.’

Somerset will spend the rest of the week in northern Kentucky, where they will play games against Bellevue, Walton-Verona, and Lloyd Memorial. Along with getting to play some games against northern Kentucky teams, the team will get to take in a couple of Cincinnati Reds games against the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Nationals.

With Somerset being on spring break this week, Grundy wants his team to relax and have some fun this week in the northern part of the Bluegrass State.

“We’ve been going to Destin, Florida, or Bowling Green, over the years for tournaments,” explained Grundy. “This year, we decided to go up to northern Kentucky and play some teams up there. While we are there, we are going to watch the Reds play the Angels and the Nationals – it’s like a team-bonding thing. We are coaches and dads, so we know that these boys need to have some fun, so that’s what this week is going to be all about.”

Somerset played against Bellevue and Walton-Verona yesterday. The Jumpers will play against Lloyd Memorial tomorrow.
