2012: The Year that Was in Local Sports

(Continued)

All six local teams advanced to the regional tournaments, but only for a short time, as all six squads were eliminated in the opening round of play. In all, local teams were outscored by a combined margin of 31-2.
In volleyball, for the fifth year in a row, the Lady Warriors of Southwestern won a 12th Region title and advanced to the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament, where they fell to Mercy, who finished as state runner-up to highly-touted Assumption. Skip Cottrell and the Lady Warriors had final record of 29-11 this past season.
The Pulaski County Lady Maroons, coached by Teresa Combs, finished as the regional runner-up to the Lady Warriors for the second straight season. Pulaski County, who won the 47th District Tournament, didn’t go down to Southwestern without a fight in the championship round. The Lady Maroons finished the 2012 season with a mark of 23-14.
Pulaski County golfer Elsa Moberly had a tremendous season for the Lady Maroons, as she received statewide recognition after being named to the All-State Girls Golf Team. Moberly, who was named the Commonwealth Journal’s All-County Player of the Year for the second year in a row, was the runner-up at the Region 9 Tournament and finished tied for third at the KHSAA State Golf Tournament.
On the gridiron, both the Maroons and the Briar Jumpers came away with impressive seasons, while Southwestern struggled a year after winning the program’s first-ever regional title.
Somerset, for the fourth straight season, finished as regional champions after downing long-time rival Danville in the finals of Class 2A Region 4. Robbie Lucas and company fell to Newport Central Catholic, the eventual 2A state champion, in the semifinals a week after a dominant win over the Admirals of Danville. The Briar Jumpers’ final record was 11-3.
