Warriors dominate in season opener

Commonwealth Journal

Somerset — Southwestern High School baseball head coach Alex Eaton wondered how his team would perform in their first live action of the 2013 high school baseball season.

Though Eaton’s Warrior ball club came away with an 18-0 victory over Clinton County on Friday evening at Warrior Stadium, he wasn’t particularly pleased with his team’s performance, particularly at the plate.

“Obviously anytime you come out on top, it’s plus,” began Eaton, who is in his third year as the Warrior skipper. “We didn’t play any scrimmage games, so this was our first live action. I’m happy to come out with the victory, but I didn’t feel like we had two or three good at-bats the rest of the night. We put balls in play, but we didn’t square up. The score doesn’t really represent how we hit. I just wish we would have used the field, rather than try to pull the ball like we did.”

Southwestern jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame, an inning that saw the Warriors send 17 batters to the dish. In the 11-run inning, the Warriors had five hits and took advantage of two Clinton County errors.

After both squads went scoreless in the second inning, the Warriors added seven runs to the onslaught in the third frame, allowing them to run out to an 18-0 advantage over the Bulldogs of  Clinton County. In the inning, Eaton’s club tallied seven runs on seven hits.

For the Warriors, junior Jesse Meece led the way, finishing with three hits and three RBI’s in the victory. Senior Thomas Howard and junior Trevor Stacey both chimed in with two hits apiece in the game, with Stacey coming away with a pair of RBI’s.

On the hill, senior Brandon Tucker got the victory for the Warriors. In two innings of work, the senior struck out three batters, while giving up zero hits. Eighth-grader Brandon Pruitt, who came into to the game to relieve Tucker, struck out three batters.

Southwestern, who moved to 1-0 with the victory, returned to action yesterday afternoon against South Laurel. Look for details of yesterday’s South Laurel-Southwestern match-up in Tuesday’s sports section.
