Danville upsets Jumpers, 35-23

Somerset — Danville High School brought only 23 players to face district rivals Somerset High School. However, Jawan Gray was probably all they needed, as the Admirals stunned the Jumpers 35-23 in their district opener.

Gray scored a touchdown, rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries and had two interceptions on defense.

After the two teams were deadlocked at 14-14 at halftime, the Admirals scored two TDs to go up 28-14 with 9:43 left in the game.

Somerset’s Jordan Doan scored from 5 yards out to cut the Ads’ lead to 28-21. However, Danville countered with a 2-yard run score by Olyjawan Ford to give the Admirals a 35-21 lead with 2:52 left in the game.

Somerset managed to block a Danville punt in the end zone late in the game to score a safety, to put the score at 35-23.

In the opening half, Danville (4-3, 1-0) took two leads but Somerset senior Bryson Jones scored two touchdowns, on runs of 2 yards and 1 yard, to keep the score close.

Somerset freshman Jordan Doan provided most of the Jumpers’ offense with 167 yards rushing on 14 carries and had 3 catches for 23 yards.

Somerset (3-4, 0-1) had only 34 passing yards and gave the ball up 4 times on interceptions.
