Pulaski captures 2nd straight district title

Lady Maroons sweep Casey Co. in 3 sets to win title

Somerset — The Pulaski County High School volleyball program won back-to-back 47th District Tournament Championships after beating Casey County High School in the finals on Thursday night. The Lady Maroons claimed the gold trophy after downing Casey County in three sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-17).

Pulaski defeated Casey County last year for the 2012 district crown, and the Lady Maroons downed their district rival Lady Rebels two times in the regular season by winning both by a score of 3-1 and 3-2.

“A lot of people don’t give our group enough credit they see its Pulaski but they don’t understand what goes into being apart of this team,” stated Pulaski coach Teresa Combs. “Sometimes people just expect us to do things and they don’t give the girls enough credit for the work and the preparation that they put into it.”

In the first set there were three ties and two lead changes. Pulaski started the set with the lead and the Lady Rebels were not able to tie the score until 9 all. The Lady Maroons held on to the lead with a kill from Samantha Randolph.

Casey County tied again at 10 all this time taking their first lead of the game at 11-10. Pulaski was able to tie and get the lead back immediately within the next two points. The Lady Maroons held on to the lead and went on a 9-1 run making the score 18-12 including Two aces from Alyssa Black, Two blocks from Chelsea Smith, and two kills from Randolph. Pulaski won the set 25-17, an eight-point lead was the largest the Lady Maroons were able to hold.

In the second set the Lady Rebels did not pose much threat for Pulaski as they easily had 14-point lead at 19-5. Randolph had three kills in the set, Smith had a block and a kill, Jessica Ping had an ace and two kills, CeCe Roberts had an ace and a kill, and Katie Dick had a block and a kill to help the Lady Maroons end the set with a score of 25-12.

The third set was the first time that the Lady Rebels held onto a lead for more than one point. Pulaski started the set with the lead but Casey tied at 2 all. Pulaski was able to tie and surpass the Lady Rebels at 9 all then the lead came at 10-9. A three-point lead was the highest Casey ever saw.

There were three other ties at 12 all, 13 all, and 14 all before Pulaski 7-1 run giving the Lady Maroons an advantage that Casey was unable to recover from. Allie Stevens help to give Pulaski an edge on the back row with several digs and helped them to end the set 25-17.

Both Pulaski and Casey will be representing the 47th District in the 12th Region Tournament which because of the win Pulaski has the honor of hosting. Pulaski will find out who they need to prepare for on Saturday morning at the drawing.

Congratulation to Samantha Randolph, CeCe Roberts, Jessica Ping, Kaitlyn Moore, Abby Eaton, Allison Clark and Shelby Stringer on being selected for the 47th District All Tournament Team.

Randolph led the way with kills getting 16, Ping followed with six, Roberts with five, Ashtyn Lyons with four, Dick with four and Smith with three.

Smith had the game high for blocks with six, Randolph had four, Dick had three, and Lyons and Ping had two.

Black set the pace with aces getting four, Roberts had one and Ping had one.

Black and Randolph tied with 12 assist and Roberts had five.
