Warriors fall to Wayne Co. in finals

Somerset — Southwestern came into last night’s Boys 48th District Championship game having won three district titles in a row.

The Warriors’ string of district championships was put to an end last night at the Wigwam, as the Wayne County Cardinals came away with 76-66 win to claim a district banner of their own.

It just wasn’t the best of night for the Warriors, who fell to 23-5 overall with the loss to the Cardinals. On the year, three of Southwestern’s five setbacks have come to Wayne County.

“We played well in spots, but we didn’t rebound the ball very good,” began Warrior head coach Steve Wright. “We did some good things, but in the third quarter, we had some breakdowns and turned the ball over at crucial times. We shot ourselves in the foot a little bit tonight. We didn’t get it done.”

Wright, who is in his third season as the head coach of the Warriors, thought his team would have a better outing than they did.

“I thought we would play a little bit better tonight than we did, so it’s kind of frustrating,” continued the Warrior hoops coach. “We had been shooting the ball really well as of late, but we didn’t shoot it well tonight – I thought that hurt us.”

After one quarter in the books, Wayne County held a 19-17 lead over the Warriors. The entire first period was a back and forth battle between the two district foes, but the Cardinals would take the frame by a two-point margin.

Southwestern battled back in the second period, outscoring the Cardinals by an 18-12 total. Justin Edwards tallied 6 points in the frame for the Warriors, while Steven Fitzgerald chimed in with 5 points.

The Warriors, after outscoring Wayne County by a six-point margin in the frame, went into the locker room with a 35-31 advantage.

Paced by a 14-point quarter from Peyton Woods, the Cardinals won the third frame by a total of 23-15. After trailing for much of the frame, Wayne County took the lead from the Warriors at 45-44 with just under four minutes left in the quarter.

Heading into fourth and final period, the Cardinals held a four-point, 54-50 lead over Southwestern. Wayne County, despite a comeback effort from the Warriors, would hold to win the game, allowing them to move their record to 28-1 and earn the district championship banner.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by Woods, who led all scorers with 27 points. Trey Blevins chimed in with 25 points, while Corey Stearns hit double figures with 14 points.

For Southwestern, Edwards finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds on the night. Fitzgerald scored 13 points in the loss, while Adam Isaacs chimed in with 12 points. Danny Butt and Dylan Gaskin both had 9 points each.

The trio of Edwards, Fitzgerald, and Isaacs was named to the 48th District All-Tournament team.

Both Southwestern and Wayne County will return to action in next week’s Boys 12th Region Tournament, which will be held at Pulaski County High School.
