Cal Ripken 10-year-olds eliminated after loss

Saturday sees All-Stars dominate Wisconsin team in 10-0 shut-out, but fall to Indiana squad

Somerset —

The Lake Cumberland All-Stars kicked off the tournament portion of the Cal Ripken 10-year-old Ohio Valley Regionals in fine-fashion, dominating Green Bay (Wisc.) by a 10-0 margin on Saturday morning at the Ward Correll Sports Complex.
Later that afternoon, Lake Cumberland’s tournament run came to a halt, as South Bend (Ind.) came away with a 5-2 loss. Unfortunately, the three-run loss eliminated Lake Cumberland from tournament action.
Paced by a great game on the mound from pitcher John Phipps, Lake Cumberland came away with ten-run victory over Green Bay to start the day off. Phipps, who pitched three innings for Lake Cumberland, gave up a lone hit and had five strikeouts.
Lake Cumberland controlled the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. In the following frame, the local 10 year-old team added another run to grab a 5-0 advantage over Green Bay. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the ten-run mercy rule after Lake Cumberland plated five runs.
Braden Slone and Riley McBride both led Lake Cumberland with a game-high three hits. Tucker Howard, Zach Travis, and Max Morris chimed in with two hits apiece, while Drew Polston had a hit.
The second game of the afternoon would not be as kind to Lake Cumberland as the first one, as they fell to South Bend by three runs. Lake Cumberland grabbed an early 2-0 lead over South Bend, but the Indiana team plated a run in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
Phipps started the game for Lake Cumberland. Phipps, who pitched three innings, gave up zero runs on two hits and had three strikeouts.
Once again, Slone led the way for Lake Cumberland at the dish, finishing with three hits. McBride, Howard, Travis, Morris, and Isaac Stevens all had a lone hit in the contest.
