Somerset edges Warriors, 22-19

Somerset — In their first meeting at the Reservation since the 2001 season, Somerset edged Southwestern by a score of 22-19 last night in the fifth annual Don Marshall Bowl.

Somerset quarterback Castle Hatcher provided the game-winning touchdown for the Briar Jumpers with 1:36 left to play and then hauled in an interception on the following possession to ensure a three-point victory for the 'Purple and Gold.'

Hatcher, who was named the player of the game for the Jumpers, finished the game with 149 yards passing and one touchdown, and then rushed for another 65 yards and a score.

Both teams failed to score in the opening quarter, but Somerset and Southwestern both would score a touchdown in the second period to make the score 7-7 at the intermission. Hatcher hooked up with senior Cam Cheuvront for a 55-yard touchdown for Somerset, and Warrior quarterback Jesse Meece threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Devon Baker.

In the third quarter, Somerset and Southwestern both tallied touchdowns in a span of 23 seconds, allowing the Jumpers to grab a 14-13 lead over the Warriors. For Southwestern, Meece had a 12-yard touchdown, while Somerset freshman Jordan Doan scampered down the field for a 62-yard score.

The Warriors took the lead with 1:57 left in the contest, when Meece tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to junior Jacob Burchett. Southwestern's two-point try failed, putting the Warriors out front, 19-14.

Somerset finished the game with 360 total yards on the offensive side of the ball, with 211 yards coming on the ground and 149 yards coming through the air. The Warriors had 45 passing yards and 137 rushing yards for a combined 182 total yards.

Doan carried the ball 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown for Somerset. Cheuvront was the Jumpers' leading receiver, finishing with eight catches for 117 yards.

For the Warriors, Meece was named the player of the game. The senior quarterback had 40 yards passing and two touchdowns, and on the ground, Meece finished with 51 yards and a score.
