Lady Jumpers draw tourney favorites; Lady Warriors get favorable draw in other bracket

Girls 12th Region Basketball Tournament

Somerset — The Girl’s 12th Regional Basketball Tournament tips off on Wednesday night from Pulaski County High School, and the Southwestern Lady Warriors have to be pleased with how the bracket worked out for Tim Rice and company.

In tomorrow night’s first game of the tourney, the Casey County Lady Rebels — 13-15 on the year — will take on Burgin, who is 14-15 on the season.

In Wednesday’s second game, the 19-11 Lady Warriors will face Boyle County, who will bring a 17-13 mark into the contest.

Boyle County opened the regular season this year by facing Southwestern at The Wigwam, and Tim Rice’s club made short work of the Lady Rebels, winning by a very comfortable margin of 61-34.

On Thursday night, the Somerset Lady Jumpers — making their first trip to the regional tourney in 10 years — will play the first game at 6 p.m., and Erin Walker’s club could have certainly not drawn a tougher assignment right out of the gate.

Somerset — 13-17 on the season — will face the defending regional champion Lincoln County Lady Patriots, who will bring the best record in the 12th Region into the contest, with an impressive 24-5 mark for the year.

These two clubs met back in late-January at The Briar Patch, with the Lady Patriots posting a 60-42 win over Somerset.

In the nightcap on Thursday, another solid regional contender — Mercer County with a 24-8 record — will take on McCreary Central — 16-15 on the year — in the final opening round game.

The semi finals will take place next Monday night at PC at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with the championship game set for next Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
