Somerset wins fifth straight regional title with 28-21 win over Prestonsburg

Prestonsburg — Somerset High School came from behind to down Prestonsburg High School 28-21 to claim their fifth straight regional championship and the program’s 16th overall region championship. However, last night’s regional crown might have been their toughest region win, as this year’s Jumpers had to play on the road in every playoff game.

After the Jumpers stormed out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter, Prestonsburg bounced back to score 21 unanswered points to take a 21-14 lead at halftime.

Somerset quarterback Castle Hatcher connected with Will Lange on back-to-back touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to give the Jumpers the lead and a shot at another state championship appearance. Hatcher hit Lange on a 5-yard pass scoring play with 9:05 left in the game to tie the score at 21-21.

After the Jumpers’ defense forced a Prestonsburg turnover on loss of downs, Hatcher connected with Lange for a 84-yard pass TD to give the Jumpers a 28-21 lead with 2:01 left in the game.

Prestonsburg fumbled the ball on their final possession, allowing the Jumper offense to go into their victory formation to close out the game.

Hatcher scored the Jumper’s first TD on a 18-yard run midway through the first quarter, and Bryson Jones scored on a 5-yard  two minutes later to put Somerset up 14-0.

Lange rushed for 60 yards and had 153 yards in receptions with two TDs. Hatcher threw 8-of-15 for 218 yards with two passing TDs and a scored a rushing TD.

Somerset will face off with a familiar state semifinal foe in Newport Central Catholic next Friday at Newport.
