New Coach, Same Old Results

Compton’s Lady Warriors down Wayne County

Somerset — Five years ago, Courtney Compton was making her name known as a member of the Southwestern Lady Warriors volleyball team.

On Thursday night, Compton was back at the Wigwam, this time in her home debut as the head coach of the same Lady Warrior program that she once played in.

In Compton’s coaching debut at the Wigwam, her Lady Warrior squad came away with a 3-1 victory (25-20, 30-28, 25-27, 25-19) over district foe Wayne County. The victory over the visiting Lady Cardinals allowed Southwestern to get a solid start in 48th District action, as they moved to a perfect 1-0.

“At first, it was a little weird coming back here,” began Compton. “It’s only been five years since I played here, but it’s awesome to coach where I fell in love with the sport of volleyball. It’s been great to be able to come back and coach the girls and coach at the school I played at.”

Southwestern jumped out to a big lead in the first game of the evening, running out to an eight-point, 16-8 lead over the Lady Cardinals. Following a Lady Warrior 6-0 run, Wayne County answered back with seven straight points to get within a point of Southwestern at 16-15.

After Wayne County cut the lead to a lone point, Southwestern tallied four consecutive points to take a 20-15 lead. The Lady Warriors would take game one by a score of 25-20.

Game two would be hard-fought game between both clubs, but the Lady Warriors would battle to grab a two-point, 30-28 win over their district rival. The game was a game of runs by each team, but Southwestern get the final straw to go up two games to none.

The Lady Cardinals’ only game win came in the third game, a game that saw them win by a score of 27-25. Southwestern led for most of the game, but Wayne County slipped past the Lady Warriors in the end to grab the two-point victory.

Southwestern, with a victory in game four, was able to seal the match with a 25-19 win over Wayne County.

Compton was proud of her team’s effort in the district victory over Wayne County on Thursday.

“I am very happy their effort,” said the first-year Southwestern coach. “They kind of let loose there at the very beginning, but we’re a very young team. We lost four seniors from last year, so it’s taken time to adjust to that. I’m really happy with the girls’ effort and glad to get that first district win.”

Senior Kasey Williams led the way for Southwestern with a team-high 14 kills, while also finishing with an ace. Another senior, McKenzie Jones, had nine kills, while junior Katie Latham finished with seven kills and Hannah Brown chimed with six kills.

Also for Southwestern, junior Jenny Gaunce, who had a pair of kills, finished with a game-high five aces on the night. Freshman Katie Adams had four aces and two kills in the victory over the Lady Cardinals.

Southwestern was back in action last night in the BVIT at Lafayette High School, where they went up against Lexington Catholic and Whitefield Academy. The Lady Warriors will travel to Pulaski County on Thursday evening for a crosstown match-up with the Lady Maroons.
