Somerset —

If the Somerset-Pulaski County 15-Year-Old All-Stars continue to hit the ball like they did on Friday evening, all the other teams in the 2013 East Kentucky Babe Ruth 15-Year-Old State Tournament better watch out.
Montgomery County was Somerset-Pulaski’s first victim of the state tournament, as the two-time defending state champion took down Montgomery County, in five innings, by a score of 16-0 at Pulaski County High School.
The bats were hot for Somerset-Pulaski, as they blasted 13 hits in five innings to move past their first opponent of the state tournament. With the 16-run win over Montgomery County, the local all-star team earned a match-up on Saturday with South Lexington.
In the first inning alone, Somerset-Pulaski jumped out on Montgomery County by scoring six runs on six hits.
Somerset-Pulaski, in the second frame, plated four runs across the plate to run out to a 10-0 advantage over Montgomery County. Somerset-Pulaski scored four runs on three and a pair of miscues by the visiting team.
Once again, Somerset-Pulaski had another big inning, as they exploded for six runs in the third inning to grab a 16-0 lead. The big hit of the frame was a three-run home from Logan Ramsey, who sent a ball over the left center field fence.
Wade Purvis, who pitched the first two innings for Somerset-Pulaski, earned the victory. Purvis gave up one hit and had three strikeouts. Justin Walker gave up one hit and had four strikeouts in a pair of innings of work. Isaac Stephens, who pitched an inning, gave up zero hits and fanned two batters.
At the dish, Somerset-Pulaski was led by the pair of Ramsey and Trevor Howard, who both tallied three hits each. Ramsey finished with a double, a home run, and four RBI’s. Howard chimed in with three RBI’s to go along with his three hits.
Logan Combs finished with two hits, while Dustin Vaught, Aaron Estes, Logan Estes, and Purvis tallied one hit in the victory. Vaught and A. Estes both had two RBI’s on the night.
Somerset-Pulaski returned to action yesterday afternoon against South Lexington. That game story will appear in Tuesday’s sports section, but for updates and results, be sure to check out the Commonwealth Journal’s Facebook page and Twitter handle, @cjsportseditor.
