Somerset-Pulaski come back to win state

Commonwealth Journal

Lexington — What is the best way to roll into town?

How about a victory parade?

That is exactly how the Somerset-Pulaski County 14-year-old All-Stars rolled back into town on Monday evening, as they were escorted back to Somerset via a parade after claiming a state championship at the East Kentucky 14 YO Babe Ruth State Tournament.

After splitting their games with South Lexington (loss) and Russell County (win) on Sunday afternoon, Somerset-Pulaski rolled to a six-inning, 14-2 victory over South Lexington on Monday night at Veterans Park in Lexington.

With the 12-run victory over South Lexington, Somerset-Pulaski claimed a state championship and punched their tickets to next week’s Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regionals.

Somerset-Pulaski, the visiting team on the scoreboard, jumped out to 2-0 advantage after scoring a run in the second and third innings. South Lexington responded with a lone run in the bottom half of the third frame to cut the margin to one run at 2-1.

After South Lexington got within a run, Somerset-Pulaski exploded for 12 runs – all unanswered – to take a 14-1 lead after five and a half innings in the books. South Lexington did score a run in the bottom of the sixth frame, but it was too little, too late.

Hagan Elmore went the distance for Somerset-Pulaski to earn the victory. Elmore, in six innings, gave up two runs on four hits.

At the plate, Somerset-Pulaski was led by the hot bat of Cody Sturgill, who finished with a game-high four hits - including two doubles - and three RBI’s. Kross Grundy, who hit a home run, had two hits and an RBI.

Trae Harmon tallied two hits and three RBI’s in the win, while Chase Emerson chimed in with a pair of hits and two RBI’s.

Somerset-Pulaski will travel to Jasper, Indiana, next week for their Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regional Tournament. The dates for the tournament are July 24th – 29th.

Members of the 2013 state championship squad are: Trae Harmon, Brandon Pruitt, Nathanael Bell, Thomas Hislope, Jonathan Gallagher, Cody Sturgill, Chris Blount, Chase Emerson, Jacob Clark, and Logan Wesley.
