Commonwealth Journal/Clear Channel All-County Softball Team

Sydney Fourman named top softball player in county

Somerset — Sydney Fourman has been tabbed as ‘Dozer’ during her softball career.

During the 2013 high school softball season, Fourman did just that, as she bulldozed through the competition and led her Lady Warrior team to their eighth 48th District championship in a row.

After another successful season of softball in the books, Southwestern junior Sydney Fourman has been chosen as the Player of the Year for the 2013 edition of the Clear Channel Radio/Commonwealth Journal All-County Softball Team.

Fourman is one of four Lady Warriors to be named to the all-county squad, an all-county team that has four returning members and five new players on it. Along with a quartet of players from Southwestern, three Somerset players and a pair of Pulaski County ladies were named to the squad after this past season.

For the third straight year, Fourman is on the all-county team, but this time as the player of the year. The Lady Warrior junior finished the year out with 47 hits, including 13 doubles, three doubles, and nine home runs. Fourman, who had a batting average of .566, had 41 RBI’s.

Pitching-wise, Fourman was Southwestern’s ace. The junior, who went 23-9 on the year, struck out 167 batters in 176.33 innings of work, while having an earned run average (ERA) of 1.75.

Destiny Molden, Allie Venable, and Sarah Smith join Fourman on the all-county squad from Southwestern. This is Molden’s third selection to the team, as she was selected in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Molden, a sophomore, had 49 hits on the year, which included eight doubles, four triples, and six home runs. The Lady Warrior catcher had an average of .471 and 49 RBI’s.

After being named an honorable mention last season, Venable is on the team for the first time of her high school softball career. Venable had 43 hits (two doubles and three triples), 28 RBI’s, and an .383 batting average.

Smith, for the inaugural time in her career, has been voted to the all-county squad. The Southwestern junior, who had an average of .346, had 27 hits (six doubles and a triple) and 18 RBI’s.

A trio of Somerset Lady Jumpers were named to the all-county team in the 2013 season - Bethany Edwards, Jordan Lafavers, and Kirchsten Roberts. Edwards, for the fourth straight time in her prep career, is on the all-county team at season’s end.

Edwards was not only named to the all-county team, but was voted to the First-Team All-State softball team, chosen to play in the KHSSA Prep East-West All-Star Game, and then selected to the Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star Game.

The Somerset senior had an average of .532 and 56 hits in 2013, which included 19 doubles, two triples, and six home runs. The Lady Jumper centerfielder chimed in with 45 RBI’s.

Lafavers began pitching for the Lady Jumpers halfway through the season and quickly became their number one pitcher. The freshman, who went 16-8, struck out 110 batters in 157 innings and had an ERA of 1.82.

Roberts concluded her softball career at Somerset with her first selection to the Commonwealth Journal’s annual team. Roberts’ batting average for 2013 was .519, while she had 49 hits.

For Pulaski County, McKala Blevins and Sarah Howard were named to the all-county team. Blevins, for the second consecutive season, was chosen as an all-county recipient.

Howard, on the mound, went 9-6 on the season with 122 strikeouts. At the plate, the Lady Maroon senior hit two home runs and had 19 RBI’s in a season that saw her have an average of .481.

Blevins was the Lady Maroons’ top hitter this past season. As a senior, Blevins had 15 doubles and a home run, along with 16 RBI’s and an average of .400.
