Somerset Christian defeated Heritage Christian Academy on Saturday afternoon 8-1. It was a good win to end senior night for the Cougars. There were only two seniors on this young squad, goalkeeper Jordan Taylor and Daniel Guzman played defense.
“Daniel and Jordan are great seniors and leaders as the team captains,” stated head coach Ben Stein. “ They show good leadership in their play on the field. They have grown and matured a lot this season and we will miss these guys.”
Heritage was not just Somerset’s last home game it was their last regular season game, with the win the Cougars go into their tournament as the top seed.
“Overall we played a pretty good game, we wanted to maintain possession and execute on those positions. We did!” stated coach Stein. “Heritage is a team that fights till the end and they did that tonight.”
In the first half the Cougars set the tone for the game scoring two goals back to back. In the third minute of play Guzman sent a pass way down field to Colby Alexander. Alexander took a quick dribble and shot, Heritage’s goalie dove too early and the ball rolled right passed him.
Once the ball was put back in play Somerset stole it and Jon Pope got the ball in the corner, he dribble past the defenders and saw a gap. His shot was high but just missed the cross bar as it rolled down the net in the fourth minute of the game.
After a few more shot attempts from the Cougars were able to score their third goal in the 10th minute of the half with a goal from Gabriel Souza the assist was given to Pope with a great pass in front of the defense. Souza was able to easily out run them for a wide-open goal.
In the 21st minute the fourth goal was put up on the scoreboard. Caleb Adams dribbled the ball into the box and sent a pass across the field intended for teammate Nathanael Stein. The pass was intercepted by the Warriors but hit the defenders cleat and rolled in his own goal.
In the 26th minute the Cougars tried to score again Freshman Hunter Halloran dribbled into the box and got in position and took his shot he made it. As the teams were walking back to kick off the officials called off sides and took the goal away.
Heritage was able to get on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute of play. The Warriors took a corner kick Somerset tried to clear the ball but Heritage came back in the box and scored a goal.
In the 36th minute the Cougars scored the last goal of the half Stein kicked it in with an assist from Sophomore Austin McQueen. Somerset went into the half with a secure lead 5-1.
Even with a large deficit the Warriors did not give up they still played aggressively until the clock ran out. The Cougars scored their sixth goal in the 73rd minute of the game there was a foul called on Heritage in the box. Adams took the penalty and was able to score on the free kick.
Almost immediately after that the Cougars were able to score again in the 74th minute off a shot from Pope, his second goal for the game. Souza had the assist on that goal.
The Cougars got their eighth goal in the last minute of the game when Souza was able to steal the ball and dribble it in the box to score his second goal for the night.
Somerset Christian has a break before starting their tournament. With this win the Cougars finish out the regular season with an outstanding record of 7-1-1.
