Southwestern rolls over Lady Raiders

Somerset — Southwestern came into Thursday evening’s 48th District match-up with McCreary Central having lost three of their past four games, including an 11-1 rout to South Laurel in London on Tuesday night.

The Lady Warriors of Southwestern put all of that behind them on Thursday night, demolishing the McCreary Central Lady Raiders in five innings by a score of 11-0. With the ten-run victory over McCreary Central, Jim Woodall and the Lady Warriors upped their overall record to 12-5 and 2-0 in district action.

Woodall was thrilled to see his team get out of their funk with a big district win over the Lady Raiders.

“I’m really pleased, because we haven’t gotten the results that we’ve wanted in the past few games,” began Woodall. “The girls work so hard and don’t quit, which makes me extremely proud of them. It was a good win for us, which takes a little pressure off of us.”

With top player and starting pitcher Kaylee Cotton out of the lineup for the Lady Raiders, Southwestern took full advantage, banging out 11 runs on ten hits on the night.

The Lady Warriors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Hope Bruner scored on a wild pitcher and Allie Venable, who singled, scored on a groundout from Sydney ‘Dozer’ Fourman.

Fourman would come through again for Southwestern in the third inning, as the senior drilled a line drive out of the ballpark for a solo home run. With the blast of the right field wall, the Lady Warriors found themselves up by a score of 3-0.

Southwestern had themselves a big inning in the fourth frame, as they plated right runs on six hits and three errors in an inning that saw 12 Lady Warrior at-bats. The two biggest hits of the frame were two-run singles from Fourman and Shantelle Woodall.

Seven of the nine Southwestern batters had at least one hit on the evening. Fourman, Woodall, and Gillian Gibson all had two hits each, while Bruner, Venable, Destiny Molden, and Sarah Smith chimed in with a lone hit.

Fourman led all batters with a game-high four RBI’s, while Woodall had two of her own and Molden had one.

It was a great night at the dish for the Lady Warrior batters.

“We took some really good batting practice before the game tonight, and that paid off for us,” told the Lady Warrior coach. “The bottom of the order – Woodall, Gibson, and Smith – came through for us tonight. That’s what we’ve got to have every night out.”

On the hill, Fourman earned the victory in a shutout performance. In five innings on the mound, Fourman gave up four hits and had five strikeouts.

Southwestern will return to action on Monday evening, when they will host the Lady Rockets of Rockcastle County at 6 p.m. at the War Path.

The Lady Warriors will also close out their district slate next week, playing host to Wayne County on Tuesday night and then traveling to Stearns to face the Lady Raiders for the second time within a week.
