The Pulaski County High School volleyball team three-peats as 12th Region runner-ups, falling to Wayne County 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-21). Pulaski’s motto was “almost isn’t good enough” after falling short yet again in the championship game.
“We could never find our rhythm tonight and that hurt us,” stated Pulaski coach Teresa Combs. “I’m proud of our girls, we’ve had a fantastic season.”
The Lady Maroons could not hold onto a lead in the first set for more than a couple rallies. Wayne County started the set off with a kill and never let up. There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the first set alone. The first tie came at 4 all and Pulaski took the lead with a kill from Samantha Randolph.
The Lady Cardinals took the lead back immediately with a kill and a block. Junior CeCe Roberts tied the score at 6 all with a kill. Wayne County held onto the lead until the Lady Maroons tied the score again at 13 all, thanks to two aces by Roberts. Pulaski then took the lead with a kill by Randolph. The next tie came at 18 all but the Lady Maroons held onto the lead until 23-22 when Wayne County got two kills in a row. The Lady Cardinals won the set with a short serve by Pulaski. The ending score for the opening set was 25-23.
Pulaski had to play catch up ball for most of the second set with a couple ties but only holding a lead once thanks to an ace by senior Rachael Daniels. The Lady Cardinals took the lead back for good immediately. Their largest lead of the set was a 10-point lead, which they achieved at the end of the set. Freshman Alyssa Black had an ace to end a 6-1 run the Lady Cardinals were on.
In the final set Pulaski had the lead for most of the set after tying the score at 1 all and taking the advantage at 2-1 with a kill from Jessica Ping. The Lady Maroons largest lead of the set was a five-point lead. The Lady Cardinals went on a 10-2 run to tie and take the lead. Once Wayne got the lead late in the set they weren’t letting Pulaski take it back. Wayne won the third and final set 25-21.
“We made it to the Region Championship and there’s nothing to be ashamed of about that,” Combs remarked. “We are very fortunate, there are a lot of teams across the state of Kentucky that didn’t get to play tonight. I’m glad to be where we are tonight.”
Pulaski ends the season not only with a record of 25-11, but also ends it saying farewell to the 12th Region Player of the Year Samantha Randolph. Wayne County will advance to the State Tournament to be played next week.
Randolph led Pulaski in kills with 11, Ping followed with nine, Roberts with six, Katie Dick with two, Chelsea Smith and Ashtyn Lyons with one.
Roberts had the team high in aces with two, Black and Daniels both had one.
Randolph was the only Lady Maroon to get a block and she had one.
