Somerset escapes Betsy Layne, 29-20

Betsy Layne — Somerset High School had their hands full in a narrow 29-20 win over Betsey Layne High School in the opening round of the Class 2A Football Palyoffs.

Clinging unto a slim 22-20 lead in the late stages of the game, Somerset QB Catstle Hatcher broke a 32-yard run for a touchdown to secure the Jumpers’ playoff opening round victory on the road.

While Somerset led for most of the game, the Bobcats would never go away.

The Jumpers took an early lead off a Hatcher to Cam Cheuvront 55-yard TDā€ˆpass, but Betsy Layne responed to tie at 6-6 in the first quarter.

An Alex Franklin 28-yard field goal gave the Jumpers a slim 9-6 halftime lead.

Bryson Jones scored on a 69-yard touchdown run to widen the Jumper lead to 15-6, but the Bobcats countered to pull within one point at 15-14. Late in the third qiarter, Hatcher scored on a 40-yard run to put Somerset up 22-14. The Bobcats reponded again to pull within two points at 22-20 to close out the third quarter.

Somerset’s Bryson Jones rushed for 130 yards and scored a TD, while Hatcher rushed for 67 yards and scored two TDs.

On defense, Somerset made four interceptions on the night.

Somerset (6-4) will travel again, next week, to take on Middlesboro (9-2) in a rematch from two weeks ago.
