Somerset — When the final out was made in last night’s cross-town meeting at the War Path, the scoreboard read “Southwestern 2, Somerset 0.”

However, the scoreboard could have read “Sydney Fourman 2, Somerset 0,” simply because the junior did it all for the Southwestern Lady Warriors.

In the two-run victory over the cross-town rival Lady Jumpers of Somerset, Fourman blasted a pair of home runs, which turned out to be Southwestern’s only two hits in the game. On the mound, the junior struck out nine batters in a seven-inning shutout performance.

“At the beginning of the season, I said ‘How she goes is how we go,’ but I didn’t mean for her to have to do everything,” laughed Lady Warrior head coach Jim Woodall. “Tonight she pitched a shut out and hit two home runs. It was a team effort, but she carried us tonight - I’m proud of her.”

Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Somerset freshman pitcher Jordan Lafavers had a no-hitter going against the Lady Warriors. Unfortunately for the Lady Jumpers, that would all change with one swing of the bat.

To lead off the frame, Fourman ended Lafavers’ no-hit chances after she sailed a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run. Following Fourman’s blast, Lafavers and the Lady Jumpers would retire the next three batters to keep the score at 1-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, it was Déjà vu all over again, as Fourman sent a ball over the right center field fence for her second home run of the evening, which put the Lady Warriors out front, 2-0. The solo blast was Southwestern’s second and final hit of the contest.

As veteran Somerset head coach David Dorsey stated following the loss to the Lady Warriors, it was two pitches that decided the outcome.

“It was one bad pitch and one good swing,” stated Dorsey. “The first home run the ball got inside too much and she turned on it and hit it well. The second home run wasn’t a bad pitch - Fourman just hit it. Southwestern had 14 hits against us a month ago, tonight they only had two.”

On the night, Lafavers gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out six Lady Warrior batters. The freshman pitcher had to pitch a little banged up, as she was hit on each of her wrists during an at-bat in the second inning.

Somerset had six hits on the night, but they just couldn’t seem to get runners around the base paths. Senior Bethany Edwards, who hit a triple in the first frame, would be as close as the Lady Jumpers would get to scoring a run.

“We left seven runners on the base paths,” told the veteran Lady Jumper coach. “We have got to bunt the ball better and get those two-out hits because timely hitting is key. I feel like we’re getting better as a team.”

Katherine Holmes, a senior, led the charge for the Lady Jumpers with two hits. Kirschsten Roberts and Chloe Henderson both had doubles in the game, while Edwards had a triple. Sixth-grader Alyssa Richardson had a single in the loss to Southwestern.

On a night when Southwestern senior Megan Burchett was honored by the program, Woodall and the Lady Warriors included three Somerset players - Edwards, Holmes, and Roberts - in their Senior Night festivities.

“Since I’ve been here at Southwestern, we’ve always recognized all the seniors,” said Woodall. “When you’re a senior and get ready to graduate high school, that’s a huge accomplishment. I keeping telling my little senior Megan that I’m going to find a way to hold her back. She’s such a special lady, and I really hate to see her go. I helped coached Somerset last year, so I hate to see those three girls go as well, but that’s apart of life.”

Somerset, who fell to 18-12 with the setback, will host Whitley County tonight at home at 6 p.m. Southwestern, now 20-7 on the season, is on the road tonight at Rockcastle County.
