Southwestern falls to Wayne Co., 42-20

Somerset — After a 42-20 loss to Wayne County last night at the Reservation, the Southwestern Warriors fell to 0-5 on the season.

Wayne County's passing attack torched the Warrior defense 252 yards through the air from the arm of Tyler Guffey. The Cardinal quarterback went 19 of 30 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, along with another 42 yards and two scores on the ground.

The Cardinals used the momentum from a fumble recovery touchdown in the second quarter to grab an early lead over the Warriors and later come away with a 22-point victory. Along with the defensive touchdown, the Cardinals scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to grab a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. 

Southwestern would answer back with a pair of Logan Campisano touchdowns to cut the Cardinal lead to seven points at 21-14. The senior tailback had 22-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter and an eight-yard touchdown in the third period.

Wayne County would score at the tail end of the third frame to grab a 14-point, 28-14 advantage over the Warriors. With 8:46 left to play in the ballgame, Guffey had a one-yard touchdown run to put the Cardinals up 35-14.

Chandler Gover intercepted a Guffey pass and took it to the house for a 22-yard touchdown, cutting the Cardinal lead to 35-20 with 6:18 remaining in the contest. The Cardinals would put the game away with another late score.

Campisano paced the Warriors with 185 yards and two scores on 20 carries.

Southwestern finished with 0 passing yards and 276 rushing yards on the night.
