Pulaski’s Moberly ties for fith place in girls state

Bowling Green — For the second year in a row, Pulaski County High School junior Elsa Moberly has put herself in a position to compete for the individual state crown at the KHSAA Girls State Tournament at Bowling Green Country Club.

In the opening round of the state tourney on Friday, Moberly fired a even-par 72 to put herself within five shots of the lead and two shots out of second place.

However, nobody could keep pace with West Jessamine’s Grace Rose, who won the state title with a two-day total of two-under par 142. Sacred Heart won the girls team title.

Moberly tied for fifth place with a two-day total of 148. Moberly was even-par through 7 holes on the second day and was just four shots out of the lead, but she gave back four strokes to par in the last 11 holes.

Last year, Moberly tied for third and was just three strokes behind the winning score.

As a freshman in 2011, Moberly placed 11th in the state tournament individual standings.

Moberly qualified for the state tournament by winning the Region 9 Tournament at Burnside Island State Park Golf Course with a round of 2-under-par 69. The prior two seasons, Moberly finished runner-up in the Region 9 individual standings.

Moberly has qualified for several prestigious national events, including the 2013 US Girls’ Junior and the US Women’s Amateur Public Links Championships as well as the 2012 USGA (United States Golf Association) Junior Girls National Championships.

Moberly is the 41st nationally ranked player in the class of 2015 according to GolfWeek.com, and recently committed to play golf for Mississippi State University.
