Southwestern boys down Wayne Co., 8-0

Somerset — The Southwestern Warriors have peaked at the right time of the year.

With an 8-0 win over Wayne County in Monday night’s 48th District Championships game at the Plains, the Warriors are hoping to continue that stellar play in next week’s regional tournament.

Fourth-year Southwestern head coach Sean McBride has been pleased with the play of his team lately and hopes that it will continue into the 12th Region Boys Soccer Tournament.

“It feels great to play a good game and get a win,” began McBride. “We’re hoping to build on this win. We’ve been playing our best soccer of the season here lately. We have got to play full games of soccer – that’s our biggest thing right now.”

With the victory, the Warriors moved to 8-9-1 on the year, but more importantly, claimed another 48th District title.

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead over the visiting Cardinals after scoring a pair of goals within a minute of one another. Junior Codi Boston tallied the Warriors’ inaugural goal, while junior Pedro Herrera scored Southwestern’s second goal.

After netting two goals in the seventh and eighth minutes, the Warriors went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Southwestern grabbed a 4-0 advantage after Cory English and Boston both scored goals in the first nine minutes of the second half of action.

With 26:15 left to play in the match, Herrera tallied his second goal of the night to put the Warriors ahead, 5-0. Less than a minute later, Christian Strack, who had three assists, scored from 35 yards out after taking a pass from Ian Brooking.

Anand Prabhu put Southwestern out front by a seven-goal margin after scoring a goal with 23:38 left in the match.

Herrera tallied his hat trick goal in the 65th minute to put the Warriors ahead, 8-0.

Warrior goal keeper Brody Hale recorded the shutout.

Prabhu, Herrera, English, and Hunter Flynn were named to the All-District Team.

Southwestern will return to action next week, when they will began play in the regional tournament, which will be held at East Jessamine.
