Post 38 Twins down Shelbyville, 8-1

Somerset — Shelbyville Post 37 came into Wednesday evening’s match-up with the Somerset Post 38 Twins as the defending state champion.

That ‘defending state champion’ didn’t mean anything to the homestanding Twins, as they took down Shelbyville by a final tally of 8-1 on Wednesday night at Southwestern High School’s Warrior Stadium.

The Twins, who moved to 12-7 on the year with the seven-run victory over Shelbyville, jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. Shelbyville didn’t score their first run of the ballgame until the ninth and final inning.

Somerset jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the third inning, paced off of a two-run home run from Charlie Dishman. Addison Thompson, who got aboard on a walk, would score the other run.

In the bottom half of the fifth frame, Thompson, who reached on a double, scored on a passed ball to put the Twins ahead, 3-0. The run would be Thompson’s second score of the evening.

The Twins plated four runs in the sixth inning to run their lead out to seven runs at 7-0. The biggest hit of the frame would belong to Jacob ‘Gomer’ Denney, who had a bases-clearing double. Denney would later score on a double from Thompson.

A double from Logan Starnes allowed Kenny Spear to tally the Twins’ eighth and final run of the ballgame. Shelbyville tallied their lone run of the game on a sacrifice from Nate Clifton.

Aaron Smith, who pitched the first three innings for the Twins, earned the victory. In three innings on the hill, Smith gave up a lone hit and had a strikeout.

Thompson led the charge for Somerset at the dish, as the lead-off batter had three hits on the night, including a double and an RBI. Trevor Howard chimed in with a pair of hits for the Twins.

Denney had a game-high three RBI’s, which came on his double in the sixth inning. Dishman wasn’t far behind with two RBI’s that he earned on his home run in the third frame.
